Our History

Old Camden Furniture is the inspiration of David McMurtrie, who combined his passion for fine craftsmanship with his extensive knowledge of home theater to create an innovative line of furniture for today’s home entertainment systems.

A self-taught craftsman of fine furniture and a veteran set designer for large productions, David spent 15 years in New York and New Jersey engineering and constructing sets for major shows on and off Broadway.

In 2001, David followed his entrepreneurial spirit and changed professions to focus on smaller venues – home theaters. Soon after, David realized furniture manufacturers were not meeting the needs of consumers who wanted furniture and cabinetry for their new widescreen, high-definition televisions (HDTVs).

Not long after recognizing this opportunity, David was approached by a businessman who made a simple proposition: “You design the furniture, and I’ll get it manufactured overseas. We’ll keep the prices low by eliminating unnecessary costs and overhead – no corporate office, no secretaries, not even an Old Camden warehouse. We’ll focus exclusively on what matters the most – fine furniture and great customer service.”

Today, Old Camden continues to be an innovator of home entertainment furniture and home theater cabinetry. From its Plasma Pop-up Credenzas to its Cinema Cabinets, Old Camden designs and builds furniture that is as functional as it is beautiful.

By staying abreast of the ever changing consumer electronics industry, Old Camden ensures its furniture and cabinetry will house the latest televisions, electronics, speakers and subwoofers.

This in-depth knowledge of what goes into the cabinets enables Old Camden to incorporate thermal and acoustic elements into each design – details overlooked by mass-production furniture manufacturers.

During the design process, Old Camden’s design team asks questions such as, “What ventilation is required to ensure the electronics don’t overheat? How should the cabinet be designed to enhance the acoustic performance of the speakers? And how do we balance these needs against aesthetic considerations to ensure the final product is beautiful?”

Old Camden’s thoughtfully designed furniture is then built in modern, overseas factories. David travels the world to inspect proto-types and materials before allowing production to begin on new designs. Independent quality inspectors then visit the factories during and after production to ensure only the highest-quality products are shipped to customers.
